An average increase of 300% is reported by The Athletic, but the real surprise is in Mexico City. A room that usually costs $157 (about €135) for the opening match Mexico vs. South Africa now hits $3,882 (about €3,330)! Yes, you read that right, 2,373% increase. That’s almost enough for a space trip instead of just one night in a hotel.
The biggest jump is in Mexico City, where the average price per night leaps from $172 to $1,572, showing a 961% increase. Meanwhile, Toronto seems more “calm,” with prices rising… only by 78%, which feels almost reasonable given the situation.
Of course, such hikes aren’t new. Hotel prices usually spike during big international events. A good example is the Paris Olympics in 2024, where room rates went up by 141% compared to the same time last year. In the 16 cities hosting matches in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, nightly increases often reach hundreds of dollars, making it tough for fans to find a place to stay.
