The mouflon of Cyprus as a symbol of wild beauty that has survived through time
The mouflon is one of the most impressive and rare animals of the Cypriot fauna and stands out as one of the most significant endemic species of the island. This wild sheep species is found exclusively in Cyprus, primarily in small herds and in specially fenced areas within the Paphos Forest – Stavros tis Psokas. With its powerful body and large, curved horns, one could say that the mouflon represents a symbol of wildness, resilience, and natural beauty.
The mouflon thrives in dense forests and steep slopes, where it finds refuge and food, making it a true “ruler” of the mountains. Its presence in Cypriot forests is not only aesthetically significant but also essential for the balance of the ecosystem. For this reason, the mouflon is today a strictly protected species, and hunting it is prohibited, as its population had previously declined to dangerously low levels.
The horns of the mouflon and the changes in its appearance and social life
It is worth noting that the length of its horns ranges between 45 and 85 centimeters, while female mouflons do not have horns.
According to the Great Cypriot Encyclopedia, this beautiful animal of Cyprus undergoes impressive changes in appearance depending on the season, which makes it stand out. During the winter months, its fur becomes dense to keep warm, with a light brown color, light gray on its back, and long black fur at the lower part of its neck. In contrast, during summer, its fur becomes short and smooth, with a beautiful brown color and white on the lower part of its body, providing greater comfort in warm temperatures.
Its appearance is not the only aspect that changes with the seasons; there are also changes in its social life. Specifically, in autumn, after mating, the animals form mixed herds of ten to twenty mouflons and live together throughout the winter. In spring, as birthing approaches, they separate into smaller groups. The young are born in April, with each female typically giving birth to one lamb, although two are born on rare occasions.
