Work is in progress to upgrade Makarios Avenue in the heart of Nicosia. This is a joint effort by the Municipality of Nicosia and the Scientific Technical Chamber of Cyprus (ETEK).
During a Structured Democratic Dialogue Workshop in July 2025, representatives from various organizations shared over 100 ideas. These ideas aim to boost visitor numbers, commercial activity, and improve life in the urban center.
Some proposals include taxing inactive properties, simplifying licensing processes, and offering urban planning incentives. There are also plans for a marketing team to promote the center’s identity and incentives to reopen closed shops. The need for better public transport and new transport hubs was highlighted to help with traffic issues on Makarios Avenue.
The Mayor of Nicosia, Charalambos Pruntzos, noted that this is the first time such a process has been done in Cyprus. He sees the center as a great opportunity. ETEK President Konstantinos Konstantis emphasized the need for community involvement. He urged for action, thorough planning, and ongoing progress checks. The workshop’s findings will be shared with the President of the Republic and relevant Ministers, marking a fresh strategy to revitalize Nicosia’s center.
