One big issue is strict driver checks, especially at night. Since last night, police have set up roadblocks on main roads to monitor traffic.
In the past week, 85 people were caught driving under the influence of alcohol. Driving under the influence causes many serious and fatal accidents. Even a small loss of control or slow reaction can lead to terrible outcomes.
Starting tomorrow, Monday, December 15, 2025, a campaign will kick off to check for alcohol in drivers’ breath and drugs in saliva. This will run until Sunday, December 21, 2025. This effort is part of a European partnership with the European Traffic Police Network Roadpol, aiming to tackle driving under the influence more effectively.
From 2022 to 2024, driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, along with careless driving, caused most fatal accidents in Cyprus, with rates of 23.3% and 21.4% respectively. Drug use lowers a driver’s mental ability, raising the risk of accidents.
